El Tunco Beach

Located in the municipality of Tamanique, department of La Libertad (just 45 minutes from San Salvador), this vibrant beach of black volcanic sand and smooth pebbles is famous for its bohemian atmosphere, world-class waves, and electrifying nightlife.

Its name pays homage to an iconic semi-submerged rock formation off the coast that resembles a "tunco" (pig in Salvadoran slang).

Atmosphere by day: If you're looking for a lively party and to meet lots of people, visit from Friday to Sunday. If you prefer total tranquility and surfing with fewer people in the water, plan your visit between Monday and Thursday.
